Filipino Martial Arts 1-2-1 Blitz Angle # 1

Hello All,

In this video discuss the Filipino Marital Arts drill 1-2-1 Blitz that Guro Dan Inosanto teaches to his Instructors and during seminars. My goal in this video is to give an intro and a method of breaking down the drill into parts so that it is easy to learn. As I have practiced the drill and taught it to students I have observed that many people have similar issues performing the 1-2-1 Blitz.

This is the 1st part of the drill explaining Angle # 1 and how to install the Inside Sweep and Roof Block during the drill.

If you live in the Brighton Michigan area and would like to learn more about Filipino Martial Arts, Jeet Kune Do or Combat Submission Wrestling we invite you to come check us out for 2 weeks @ no cost to you.

To take us up on this offer all you have to do is to contact us @ shawnk@synergycombatscience.com or call me directly @ 517-672-2386.

Synergy Martial Arts Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do SPP Conditioning 5-14-12

Hello All,

Here is my Specific Physical Preparedness (SPP) Conditioning for 5-14-12. I am working on the following Attack By Combinations (ABC).

Run 1 mile 8:19

50 Jab-Rear Leg Round Kick-Jab R&L Lead

Dbl Jab-Rear Leg Round Kick-Jab R&L Lead

I cannot stress to you the importance of filming your practice sessions. I film mine for 3 reasons.

  1. So I can review and track my progress
  2. To show SMA students how I practice and help them develop their own practice session
  3. For non SMA students to see our training methods and see if they can add them to their own training methods

What I noticed during my review is that in my left lead double jab combo after my second jab my hips drop back. I want to avoid this because I loose power and I loose the ability to chain my strikes together. Which will be the focus of my next session.

Synergy Martial Arts GPP Conditioning 5-10-12

Martial Arts Practice and Periodization Part 1

Hello All,

Off and on for the last couple of years I have been looking into using the periodization method of training for my own personal Martial Arts practice and for teaching our students  Synergy Martial Arts.

Now let me set the table by saying all of what I do is practice which means that I am testing out theories to see if they work. Most of the time I use myself and Jerry as the guinea pigs. Then after that we implement them into our curriculum and see how it works with a larger group of people.

Since I began Synergy Martial Arts in 2005 I have sought to teach our students to become better athletes. This means in when seeking material to teach our students I choose training methods that help them to improve their movement patterning 1st and Martial Arts skills 2nd. These training methods may or may not involve movements specific to Martial Arts.

What I have often seen as I observe other Martial Artists and athletes is they have over performed the movements specific to their sport and this has actually hurt their ability to improve. Usually this begins with a loss of range of motion and eventually injures happen taking them away from class or practice for a period of time.

I have been using Kettlebells and mobility drills since 2007 to help students and athletes combat this form of over training with great success. The feedback I have gotten is that this has worked and athletic ability has improved but often times they did not feel/see it the immediate impact on their sport.

In February 2012 I attended a Bodyweight and Joint Mobility Seminar taught by Steve Cotter and it gave me a whole new perspective and and understanding how to address the above issue. For those of you who don’t know who Steve is Youtube him and you will see that he is an amazing athlete.

What I learned from Steve was breaking up conditioning/training into 2 different categories General Physical Preparedness (GPP) and Specific Physical Preparedness (SPP) to avoid over training.

GPP is training is geared towards movements/drills that help to improve mobility, overall general conditioning and to avoid injuries. In my opinion a majority of GPP should be focused on improving posterior chain strength.

SPP training involves specific movements/drills directly related to the athlete’s given sport. Usually this stimulates the anterior chain.

If you look through the posts here you can watch videos of my SPP and GPP conditioning.

In a future post I will share with you how we are beginning to implement periodization into our curriculum for our students and what the results have been.

See you in class,

Shawn

Hello All,

Here is a brief explanation of how and why we teach Sijo Bruce Lee’s 5 ways of attack. We feel that it is a very important strategy and method for our students to understand so that they can learn to develop their own personal style.

If you would like to learn more about Jeet Kune Do or would like to train with us contact me @ shawnk@synergycombatscience.com or @ 517-672-2386.

Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do SPP Conditioning 5-7-12

Hello All,

Here is my Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do Specific Physical Preparedness (SPP) Conditioning for 5-7-12. Began working on my Attack By Combinations (ABC).

During this phase in my conditioning I will be focusing on chaining my strikes together, making sure that I am covered with either my shoulder or hand and staying balanced before, during and after the strikes.

The Initial Results From My Conditioning Sessions

Hello All,

For the last 2 months I have been breaking my conditioning up into 3 days of practicing movements and techniques that will benefit my striking, grappling and Filipino martial arts and 2 days of  conditioning that will help to maintain balance in my body. On Sundays I attend a 2 hour BJJ class and I can say that all the work on my grappling days is paying off.

I am the lowest rank in the class usually, yesterday there were 3 purples and 1 3 stripe blue belt in the class so that means that some of the techniques are a little more advanced and require some mobility. Much of it is variations of the simple rolling drills I have in my conditioning work that are tied to advancing and escaping positions or submissions.

I also notice that my recovery time when I am fatigued is getting better which means that my circuits and interval training are paying off. A couple of things that I need to place in my conditioning practice are some grip work and more ab work specifically pulling my legs to my body and rotation of my trunk.

I am interested to see how as I continue to improve my conditioning sessions my BJJ skills improve as well. As we say @ Synergy Martial Arts “Practice makes improvement.’

See you in class,

Shawn
